戒煙對牙齒脫落風險的影響還幾乎一無所知。在一項男性口腔健康的前瞻性研究中，我們研究了牙齒脫落的風險是如何隨著較長時間的戒煙而改變的。
方法

研究對象是從1968年到2004年參加「退伍軍人局牙科縱向研究」（Veterans Administration Dental Longitudinal Study）的789名男性。每3年進行一次的檢查確定牙齒狀況和吸煙狀態，最長追蹤時間爲35年。使用多變數比率風險回歸模型，以1年爲間隔時間，連續評估了戒煙帶來的牙齒脫落風險。參照組由從未吸煙、吸雪茄或煙斗的男性組成。根據年齡、教育程度、吸煙的總包-年數、刷牙的頻率和牙線的使用情況來調整風險比率。
結果

在所有或部分追蹤調查中有吸煙的男性，其牙齒脫落的風險比率爲2.1（95%可信區間[CI]爲1.5–3.1）。隨著戒煙時間的增加，戒煙的男性牙齒脫落的風險有所降低，從戒煙1年後的2.0（95% CI爲1.4–2.9）到戒煙15年後的1.0（95% CI爲0.5–2.2）。戒煙後9年內的風險保持在增高的水平，但最終在13年或更長的時間之後，降低到從未吸煙的男性的水平。
