The theme of this issue of Preventing Chronic Disease is healthy aging. The image of the couple gazing at the stars reflects the opportunities for discovering new interests and hobbies at any stage in life. The couple looking up at the stars suggests looking back on memories of their years together and at the same time enjoying a new interest and looking ahead to the future. The media often promotes images of older adults engaging in highly demanding physical activities as a way to encourage the possibilities of an active lifestyle. While physical activity is an essential component of health, companionship, intellectual growth, and maintaining balance are equally important to well-being. This image is a realistic portrayal of healthy pursuits for older adults that includes shared moments of serenity, exploration, and contemplation.
