Notice to Readers: Final 2002 Reports of Notifiable Diseases
The notifiable diseases tables on pages 742--750
summarize final National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System data
for 2002. Final as of June 30, 2003, these data will be published in more detail in
the Summary of Notifiable Diseases, United States,
2002 (1). Because no cases of western equine encephalitis or paralytic poliomyelitis were reported in the United
States during 2002, these nationally notifiable diseases do not appear in these tables. Policies for reporting notifiable disease cases can vary by disease or reporting jurisdiction depending
on case status classification (i.e., confirmed, probable, or
suspected). Population estimates for the states are from the U.S. Census Bureau, Population Division, annual population estimates
by state, 2000 (2). Population numbers for territories are 2000 estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau IDB Data Access Display Mode (3).
