Public Health Leadership Institute
The CDC/University of California Public Health Leadership
Institute (PHLI) is a 1-year scholars' program that includes an
intensive on-site week, scheduled for March 14-20, 1998. Conducted
under a cooperative agreement between CDC's Public Health Practice
Program Office and the University of California at Los Angeles, the
PHLI is designed to strengthen the nation's public health system by
enhancing the leadership capacities of senior city, county, state,
and international public health officials. The program curriculum
focuses on four areas: challenges -- current and future issues
confronting public health; leadership and vision; communication and
information; and political and social change.
The seventh year of the PHLI will begin on November 8, 1997,
with an orientation for scholars at the American Public Health
Association Annual Meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana. Approximately
30 senior public health officials from city, county, state, or
international health agencies will be selected to participate in
the program.
Senior state and local health officials, including deputy
directors nominated by state health directors, are eligible. The
applications are available and must be submitted by August 15,
1997, and selected scholars will be notified by September 29, 1997.
