The 1989 National Health Interview Survey included digestive
disorders as a current health topic. The questionnaire was
developed by CDC's National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), in
collaboration with the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive
and Kidney Diseases. Respondents were asked the details (i.e.,
timing of onset, treatment, and medical diagnosis) about specific
digestive conditions; location and severity of pain; information on
normative bowel habits; and common bowel complaints.
