Council members share information, form partnerships, and promote adoption and dissemination of solutions that work. Contact the Co-Chair or NORA Coordinator to volunteer.OutreachThe NORA Public Safety Council hosted a webinar: State of Research and Practice for Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS). PFAS are also called “forever chemicals” because they are resistant to breaking down. These are artificially produced chemicals used to enhance everyday products like stain resistant clothing and furniture, cosmetics, and food packaging material. PFAS exposure has been linked to an increased risk of negative health outcomes such as cancer (kidney and testicular), increased cholesterol levels, and high blood pressure. First responders are exposed to PFAS when putting out building and vehicle fires, using special class B foams that put out high-energy liquid fuel fires, and when wearing uniforms and protective clothing that use treatments/additives.The webinar featured presentations from a diverse group of researchers, collaborators, and partners around PFAS in the public safety sector. The Public Safety Council also posted a summary of the webinar, Extinguishing the Risk of Forever Chemicals: State of the science to protect first responders, on the NIOSH Science Blog.Research AgendaNational Occupational Research Agenda for Public SafetyThe NORA Public Safety Council identified research priorities for the third decade of NORA (2016-2026) in the National Occupational Research Agenda for Public Safety. The agenda identifies eight research objectives for the nation.Research objectives for the nation:1. Reduce cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other chronic diseases2. Reduce infectious disease transmission3. Reduce musculoskeletal disorders4. Reduce motor vehicle injuries5. Reduce workplace violence6. Promote healthy work design and well-being7. Improve surveillance8. Improve resilience/preparednessSector DescriptionThe Public Safety sector includes five sub-sectors:* Fire service* Wildland fire fighting* Law enforcement* Emergency medical services* CorrectionsThese occupations fall under four specific North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes and are among some of the most dangerous. On a daily basis, these workers respond to emergencies occur that threaten people’s life, well-being, property, peace, and security, and may be putting their health, safety, and even lives on the line. Public safety workers are exposed to a variety of risks and stressors. They sometimes experience serious injuries from motor vehicle incidents, workplace violence, and musculoskeletal injuries. The NIOSH Public Safety Program facilitates the work of the Council and coordinates NIOSH research in this sector.Last Reviewed: May 23, 2022Source: National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA)* Syndicatehome NORA Home Page* About NORA plus icon+ Sectors+ Cross-sectors+ Evolution of NORA* NORA Councils plus icon+ Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing plus icono Council Members+ Cancer, Reproductive, Cardiovascular, and Other Chronic Disease Prevention plus icono Council Members+ Construction plus icono Council Members+ Healthcare and Social Assistance plus icono Council Participantso Stop Sticks Campaign+ Hearing Loss Prevention plus icono Council Members+ Healthy Work Design and Well-Being plus icono Council Members+ Immune, Infectious and Dermal Disease Prevention plus icono Council Members+ Manufacturing plus icono Council Memberso Hazardous Energy Control (Lockout and Other Means)+ Mining plus icono Council Members+ Musculoskeletal Health plus icono Council Members+ Oil and Gas Extraction plus icono Council Members+ Public Safety plus icono Council Members+ Respiratory Health plus icono Council Memberso Faces of COPD Video Series+ Services plus icono Council Memberso Protecting Temporary Workers+ Transportation, Warehousing and Utilities plus icono Council Members+ Traumatic Injury Prevention plus icono Council Members+ Wholesale and Retail Trade plus icono Council Members* NORA Agendas* Historical InformationFollow NIOSH* YouTubeNIOSH Homepage* NIOSH A-Z* Workplace Safety & Health Topics* Publications and Products* Programs* Contact NIOSH* About CDC* Contact Us* 800-232-4636Facebook Twitter Instagram LinkedIn Youtube Pinterest SnapchatFacebook Twitter Instagram LinkedIn Youtube Pinterest Snapchat RSS* CONTACT CDCContact UsCall 800-232-4636Email Us* ABOUT CDC+ About CDC+ Jobs+ Funding* POLICIES+ Accessibility+ External Links+ Privacy+ Policies+ Web Policies+ No Fear Act+ FOIA+ OIG+ No Fear Act+ Nondiscrimination+ Vulnerability Disclosure Policy+ CDC Archive+ Public Health Publications+ HHS.gov+ USA.gov* CONNECT WITH US+ Youtube+ Snapchat* LANGUAGES+ Español+ 繁體中文+ Tiếng Việt+ 한국어+ Tagalog+ Русский+ العربية+ Kreyòl Ayisyen+ Français+ Polski+ Português+ Italiano+ Deutsch+ 日本語+ فارسی+ English* U.S. Department of Health & Human Services* Accessibility* External Links* Privacy* Policies* Web Policies* FOIA* OIG* No Fear Act* FOIA* Nondiscrimination* OIG* Vulnerability Disclosure Policy* CDC Archive* Public Health Publications* HHS.gov* USA.govContent Credential×This image was edited or created using GenAI (generative artificial intelligence). Our experts review all images in an effort to ensure accuracy and quality before use.Learn more about CDC's usage of GenAI.
