CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) supports CDA import of certain healthcare-associated infection (HAI) data. To assist programmers in creating standards for reporting via CDA import, NHSN offers an Implementation Guide and associated materials based fully on HL7-balloted CDA document specifications. Types of data that can be reported include event reports, denominator data, and process-of-care measures. How is CDA used for NHSN reporting?Facilities interested in importing data into NHSN rather than entering it manually have the option to work with a CDA implementer to create CDA files. The CDA implementer develops software that extracts NHSN data from the facility’s available electronic sources of medical information (e.g., electronic medical record software, laboratory information, and admission, discharge, and transfer data) to create valid CDA files. To report to NHSN, CDA files are created, zipped, and then imported into NHSN. Monthly reporting plans must be added manually before data can be imported. Users who wish to import CDA files into NHSN must have administrative rights.Top of PageWhat can be reported to NHSN using CDA import?Valid CDAs are created based on specific NHSN HAI Implementation Guides (IG’s). Automated send can be used to import CDA files from one or more facilities in a single zip file. All reporting options require that the facility be enrolled and set-up to use NHSN – this includes adding reporting locations and monthly reporting plans. Enrollment, set-up, and annual surveys are completed manually for all modes. Are data reported to NHSN using CDA import the same data that are reported manually?Yes, data should be the same with all modes of NHSN reporting. Data are still collected according to the NHSN protocols and forms. It is the facility’s responsibility to verify that the data being reported to NHSN are correct.Top of PageTrainingNewsletters / Members Meeting UpdatesE-mail UpdatesState-based HAI Prevention ActivitiesLast Reviewed: February 17, 2023Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID), Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion (DHQP)* Syndicatehome NHSN CSSP* About CDA* Getting Started* FAQs* Implementation Toolkits & Resources plus icon+ Guide to CDA Versions+ NHSN Terminology plus icono CDCNHSNo HSLOC* Data Validation & Testing plus icon+ Validation Tools & Test Sites* Importing Data* Promoting Interoperability Program* Webinars & Training Videos* Innovation Tools* Synthetic Data Set Validation plus icon+ Vendor OID+ AU SDS FAQs+ AR SDS FAQs+ Vendors that have Passed the AU SDS Validation+ Vendors that have Passed the AR SDS ValidationQuick Links* CDA Toolkit Release 13.0* Guide to CDA Versions* NHSN Terminology* DIRECT Protocol* VAE Synthetic Data Set* About CDC* Contact Us* 800-232-4636Facebook Twitter Instagram LinkedIn Youtube Pinterest SnapchatFacebook Twitter Instagram LinkedIn Youtube Pinterest Snapchat RSS* CONTACT CDCContact UsCall 800-232-4636Email Us* ABOUT CDC+ About CDC+ Jobs+ Funding* POLICIES+ Accessibility+ External Links+ Privacy+ Policies+ Web Policies+ No Fear Act+ FOIA+ OIG+ No Fear Act+ Nondiscrimination+ Vulnerability Disclosure Policy+ CDC Archive+ Public Health Publications+ HHS.gov+ USA.gov* CONNECT WITH US+ Youtube+ Snapchat* LANGUAGES+ Español+ 繁體中文+ Tiếng Việt+ 한국어+ Tagalog+ Русский+ العربية+ Kreyòl Ayisyen+ Français+ Polski+ Português+ Italiano+ Deutsch+ 日本語+ فارسی+ English* U.S. Department of Health & Human Services* Accessibility* External Links* Privacy* Policies* Web Policies* FOIA* OIG* No Fear Act* FOIA* Nondiscrimination* OIG* Vulnerability Disclosure Policy* CDC Archive* Public Health Publications* HHS.gov* USA.govContent Credential×This image was edited or created using GenAI (generative artificial intelligence). Our experts review all images in an effort to ensure accuracy and quality before use.Learn more about CDC's usage of GenAI.
