Related Pages
The Vital Statistics Rapid Release program provides access to the timeliest vital statistics for public health surveillance, through releases of: 1) focused surveillance activities, 2) Quarterly Provisional Estimates, 3) Vital Statistics Rapid Release Reports, and 4) state and national provisional control counts of births, deaths and infant deaths based on a current flow of vital statistics data from state vital records offices. Using the provisional data, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) produces much more timely estimates of important health indicators for public health practitioners, researchers, and health policy-makers than would be possible using final annual data.
Surveillance Activities
COVID-19 Surveillance
Provisional counts of COVID-19 deaths based on the current flow of death certificate data collected and analyzed by CDC. Provisional death counts are provided by time-period, jurisdiction, and select demographic characteristics.
Provisional Drug Overdose Death Counts
Drug Overdose Surveillance
Dynamic visualizations of the current flow of drug overdose data collected and analyzed by CDC. This web-based application allows people to create customized, visual interpretations of provisional drug overdose death data, by jurisdiction and time period.
Provisional Maternal Mortality Surveillance
National-level provisional maternal mortality rates based on a current flow of mortality data in the National Vital Statistics System. This data visualization shows 12-month ending maternal mortality rates in the United States by age group, and race and Hispanic origin.
FluView Interactive
FluView includes enhanced web-based interactive applications that can provide dynamic visuals of the influenza data collected and analyzed by CDC. These FluView Interactive applications allow people to create customized, visual interpretations of influenza data, as well as make comparisons across flu seasons, regions, age groups and a variety of other demographics.
CDC WONDER
CDC WONDER
Access up-to-date provisional mortality and natality data in CDC's Wide-ranging ONline Data for Epidemiologic Research (WONDER). WONDER is a versatile online data access platform that makes the information resources of CDC available to public health professionals and the public at large. This platform allow researchers to query provisional mortality and natality data by selected location, demographic, and time period criteria.
Quarterly Provisional Estimates
Mortality - Quarterly Provisional Estimates
Provisional estimates of death rates for 2022 through the first quarter of 2024. Estimates are presented for each of the 15 leading causes of death plus estimates for deaths attributed to drug overdose, falls (for persons aged 65 and over), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease, homicide, firearms-related deaths, and COVID-19.
Provisional estimates of death rates for 2022 through the third quarter of 2024. Estimates are presented for each of the 15 leading causes of death plus estimates for deaths attributed to drug overdose, falls (for persons aged 65 and over), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease, homicide, and firearms-related deaths.
Natality - Quarterly Provisional Estimates
Provisional estimates of selected reproductive indicators from birth data for 2022 through the third quarter of 2024. Estimates are presented for: general fertility rates, age-specific birth rates, total and low risk cesarean delivery rates, preterm birth rates and other gestational age categories.
Provisional estimates of selected reproductive indicators from birth data for 2022 through the fourth quarter of 2024. Estimates are presented for: general fertility rates, age-specific birth rates, total and low risk cesarean delivery rates, preterm birth rates and other gestational age categories.
Infant Mortality - Quarterly Provisional Estimates
Provisional estimates of infant mortality (deaths of infants under 1 year per 1,000 live births), neonatal mortality (deaths of infants aged 0-27 days per 1,000 live births), postneonatal mortality (deaths of infants aged 28 days through 11 months per 1,000 live births), and death rates for the five leading causes of infant death for 2022 through the second quarter of 2024.
Provisional estimates of infant mortality (deaths of infants under 1 year per 1,000 live births), neonatal mortality (deaths of infants aged 0-27 days per 1,000 live births), postneonatal mortality (deaths of infants aged 28 days through 11 months per 1,000 live births), and death rates for the five leading causes of infant death for 2022 through the third quarter of 2024.
Reports
Vital Statistics Rapid Release Reports
Vital Statistics Rapid Release Reports are based on the current flow of vital statistics data from state vital records offices and include annual reports of provisional birth data and topical analyses on vital statistics surveillance issues. These online-only reports provide additional methodological information or in-depth analyses on a specific topic or data set to help readers understand and interpret provisional mortality and natality data.
State and National Provisional Control Counts
Births, Deaths, and Infant Deaths
Monthly and 12 month-ending provisional counts of births, deaths and infant deaths are provided for the U.S., while monthly provisional counts of births and deaths are also provided by state of residence (50 states, District of Columbia and Puerto Rico). Provisional counts of births, deaths, and infant deaths are based on data received and processed by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) as of a specified date and may be updated during the course of a data year.
