Public-use file indexes (Appendix 1a, 1b, and 1c linked below) can be searched to find variable names or identify relevant variables based on key words in variable labels. These documents replace the “Series 1” and “Series 2” reports published by NCHS for the 2006–2010 and earlier releases, which can be found within the NSFG’s “Publications and Information Products” pages. The survey design and all related aspects were planned with the entire period 2011 to 2019 in mind, thus are consistent from release to release. The documents below provide information on survey design and operations for 2015-2017, and reflect only minor changes and updates.* 2015-2017 National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG): Summary of Design and Data Collection Methods [PDF – 432 KB]* 2015-2017 National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG): Sample Design Documentation [PDF – 552 KB]* 2015-2017 National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG): Sample Error Estimation Design [PDF – 118 KB]* 2015-2017 National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG): Weighting Design Documentation [PDF – 527 KB]Variance Estimation ExamplesEach of the PDF files below provides programs and output in SAS and STATA for three examples of variance estimation for the 2015–2017 NSFG data. These examples cover some of the basic types of variance estimation you may do in your analyses. See also the section “Sample Weights and Variance Estimation” in the 2015–2017 NSFG User’s Guide [PDF – 982 KB] for more information. If you have any questions about any of these examples, please e-mail the NSFG staff at nsfg@cdc.gov.Variance Estimation:* Example 1. The variables are described in Appendix 7 of the User’s Guide.Contextual data: The 2015-2017 contextual data file consists of four variables: CASEID, the State FIPS code and County FIPS code of the respondent’s address at the time of interview, and the State FIPS code of the respondent’s address at the time of the previous Census. These geographic variables are only available through the NCHS and Census RDCs due to the increased risk of deductive disclosure of individual respondent’s identities when such geographic variables are linked to the survey data. FIPS codes can be used to merge external data with the 2015-2017 NSFG public-use files. For more information about using these data, including options on accessing the RDC and associated charges, visit the RDC website. For additional information or questions please contact the NSFG staff via mail, e-mail, or telephone at:National Survey of Family GrowthReproductive Statistics BranchDivision of Vital StatisticsNational Center for Health Statistics3311 Toledo RoadHyattsville, MD 20782nsfg@cdc.gov(301) 458-4222Last Reviewed: October 31, 2024, 11:40 AMSource: National Center for Health Statistics* Syndicatehome National Survey of Family Growth* About NSFG* What's New* Questionnaires, Datasets, and Related Documentation plus icon+ 2022-2023 NSFG: Public-Use Data Files, Codebooks, and Documentation+ 2011-2019 Combined Data Files plus icono Combining Data across NSFG File Releases from 2011-2019o Other Information on Data Collection 2011-2019o Special Supplementary Data Files+ 2017 - 2019 NSFG plus icono 2017 - 2019 NSFG Codebookso 2017-2019 NSFG Questionnaires+ 2015-2017 NSFG plus icono 2015-2017 NSFG Codebookso 2015-2017 NSFG Questionnaires+ 2013–2015 NSFG plus icono 2013-2015 NSFG Codebookso 2013–2015 NSFG Questionnaires+ 2011–2013 NSFG plus icono 2011-2013 NSFG Codebookso 2011–2013 NSFG Questionnaires+ 2006–2010 NSFG plus icono 2006–2010 NSFG Codebookso 2006–2010 NSFG Questionnaires+ NSFG Cycle 6 (2002) plus icono 2002 NSFG Questionnaires+ NSFG Cycle 5 (1995)+ NSFG Cycle 4 (1988)+ NSFG Cycle 3 (1982)+ NSFG Cycle 2 (1976)+ NSFG Cycle 1 (1973)* Key Statistics from NSFG plus icon+ 2015-2019 NSFG Key Statistics+ Archived NSFG Key Statistics* Survey Participants* Publications and Information Products* Bibliography* Research ConferencesGet Email UpdatesTo receive email updates about this page, enter your email address:Email AddressWhat's this?SubmitRelated Sites* NCHS Listservs* Surveys and Data Collection Systems* Vital Statistics: Birth Data* About CDC* Contact Us* 800-232-4636Facebook Twitter Instagram LinkedIn Youtube Pinterest SnapchatFacebook Twitter Instagram LinkedIn Youtube Pinterest Snapchat RSS* CONTACT CDCContact UsCall 800-232-4636Email Us* ABOUT CDC+ About CDC+ Jobs+ Funding* POLICIES+ Accessibility+ External Links+ Privacy+ Policies+ Web Policies+ No Fear Act+ FOIA+ OIG+ No Fear Act+ Nondiscrimination+ Vulnerability Disclosure Policy+ CDC Archive+ Public Health Publications+ HHS.gov+ USA.gov* CONNECT WITH US+ Youtube+ Snapchat* LANGUAGES+ Español+ 繁體中文+ Tiếng Việt+ 한국어+ Tagalog+ Русский+ العربية+ Kreyòl Ayisyen+ Français+ Polski+ Português+ Italiano+ Deutsch+ 日本語+ فارسی+ English* U.S. Department of Health & Human Services* Accessibility* External Links* Privacy* Policies* Web Policies* FOIA* OIG* No Fear Act* FOIA* Nondiscrimination* OIG* Vulnerability Disclosure Policy* CDC Archive* Public Health Publications* HHS.gov* USA.govContent Credential×This image was edited or created using GenAI (generative artificial intelligence). Our experts review all images in an effort to ensure accuracy and quality before use.Learn more about CDC's usage of GenAI.
